Costa Rica has a typical Central American diet. You can find rice and beans on most menu’s.

Gallo Pinto is the national dish of Costa Rica and can be found in almost every restaurant. It is a breakfast dish with mixed beans and rice, with scrambled or fried eggs and fried plantains.

Casado is another dish popular in Costa Rica. It is rice and beans with fried capsicum/peppers and plantain with a choice of meat (chicken, fish, pork or steak)

Ceviche is a fish dish which has been marinated in lemon or lime juice. It is often accompanied with finely chopped herbs and vegetables.

Olla de Carne is a chuky beef stew which usually has potatoes, carrots, plantains, chayotes, sweet potatoes, yuccas and camotes mixed in with it.

Sopa De Mariscos is a seafood soup with a tomato base. The seafood element of the dish can cover squid, mussels, shrimp and clams. Occasionally vegetables are included in the dish.

Tamales are a tasty meal with boiled plantain leaves stuffed with corn meal, saffron rice, pork, beans and vegetables.
